Description
Janus presided over the beginning and ending of conflicts, hence war and peace. The gates of the Temple of Janus in Rome were opened in times of war and closed to mark the arrival of peace. As a god of transitions Janus also had functions pertaining to birth and to journeys and exchange, he is perceived as one of the gateway gods in mythology.
Berlin's interpretation of Janus is of an asymmetrical being, both halves of the mouth offset to cover the aspects of functional responsibility and the body seemingly shifting between both sides of his character. Berlin has created a very current, Neo-expressionist Janus for these uncertain times and this form would be recognised down the ages, holding relevance to greater powers and the mysteries of duality.
