Description
Brilliantly capturing the intensity and artistry of the sculptor at work, this large and important painting by Oscar Matthiesen depicts his subject with wild, unkempt hair and a lean frame. The sculptor has rolled up the sleeves of his artist smock and is reaching out to touch the shoulder of the nude he is in the midst of creating. On the wall behind him is another painting that serves as a faint aureole that gives the sculptor a saintly character. Matthiesen studied with Puvis de Chavannes in Paris, and is best known for a massive painting, “Rigsdagsbilledet," that incorporated over 200 portraits and now hangs in the Danish Parliament building. The artist traveled to the United States in the 1890s and contributed to the Denmark pavilion at the Columbian Exposition in 1893 in Chicago. The painting is oil on canvas, and is signed and dated.
