"Beneath As It Were" in the "Lay of the Land" collection is an original encaustic painting by San Diego artist Shima Shanti. Layers of purified beeswax mixed with all-natural earth pigments and a fir-tree sap called damar are painted on Russian Baltic birch panel then fused with the flame of a torch. Shima's minimal aesthetic and choice of all-natural earth elements creates patina and texture that is storied, translucent, and luminous. In this simplicity unexpected levels of complexity surface.
