Etched in Stone in the Lay of the Land collection is an original encaustic painting by San Diego artist Shima Shanti. Encaustic, which means "to burn in" is an ancient and alchemic art form originating in Egypt and Greece. Each painting as up to 50 layers of molten, pigmented wax painted on a birch panel; each layer fused with the flame of a torch to the layer beneath creating a patina and texture that is storied, translucent and luminous. The earth-tone palette and minimal aesthetic reveals unexpected levels of complexity.
