Description
Portrait of a Three-Masted Staysail Schooner Helena
Charlestown, Massachusetts, ca. 1900
Signed (l.r.) S.F.M Badger, Charlestown, Mass.” and inscribed on verso.
Oil on canvas
28 ¾” x 42 ¾” with frame
Exceptional condition, no signs of any restoration. In the original giltwood and gesso frame.
Provenance: Private Collection of Pat and Rich Garthoeffner
The ship Helena was built in Bath, Maine in 1900 for Captain Charles Hodgkins whom the painting was commissioned by. Badger was known for his attention to detail and measured each vessel himself. His works can be found in the Maine Maritime Museum, Mystic Seaport, the Peabody Essex Museum among others. -
