Description
Riverboat (1949) is a striking early example of mid-century American modernism by Stuart Robert Purser. Executed in oil and measuring an impressive 24 x 60 inches, the panoramic format reinforces the horizontal sweep of the river setting and the rhythmic procession of figures across the composition.
In this work, Purser merges figuration and abstraction with confident structural clarity. Elongated, silhouetted forms move among a network of mast-like diagonals and linear scaffolding, evoking dockworkers, rigging, and the industrial geometry of a working riverboat. Muted ochres, warm neutrals, and passages of blue create an atmospheric ground suggestive of reflected water and humid Southern light, while circular motifs and subtle symbolic elements lend the painting a poetic undercurrent.
Created in 1949, the painting captures Purser at a formative moment, balancing narrative subject matter with a modernist vocabulary influenced by postwar abstraction. The flattened spatial planes and architectural composition reveal his interest in structure, rhythm, and the human presence within constructed environments.
The verso label identifies the work as:
“17. RIVERBOAT, 1949. Oil. 24" x 60". Collection: Mr. & Mrs. J. Hamilton Cade, Alexandria, Louisiana.”
This documented early provenance situates the painting within a Southern collecting context and adds historical depth to the piece.
A dynamic and architectonic composition, Riverboat exemplifies Purser’s ability to translate regional subject matter into a sophisticated modernist language, making it a compelling acquisition for collectors of mid-century American painting.
Signed by the artist on the front lower right corner. Oil on canvas. -
