Description
A brilliant example of California Impressionist painting, this view of the East Bay hills shimmering in pink, purple, jade and periwinkle, with scrubby trees in bonsai shapes in the foreground, was made by Edwin Pond James in the 1920s. James' palette is vivid and arresting, and he captures the beauty of the landscape east of San Francisco beautifully. Significantly, this painting was exhibited at the Oakland Art Gallery, probably in the late 1920s, since the gallery exhibited James' work between 1928 and 1939. James lived in Alameda and also worked as a dentist, so his paintings are extremely scarce. The painting is oil on artist board, and is signed in the lower right corner, "E.P. James".
