Description
Virgil Macey Williams (1830–1886), Sailboats and Fishermen on the Coast of Capri, o/c, 38" x 62"; signed lower left Virgil Williams and dated 1869. Exhibited 1880 in Boston; Fisherman on Coast of Capri; Coral Boats on the Beach at Capri (p. 104). Schwartz lists Fishermen of Capri, exhibited in San Francisco 1894.
This historic work is an exquisite example of this master painter’s Realism. Virgil Williams was the founder of the prestigious Bohemian Club of artists and also pioneered the California style of painting. Among his followers were William Keith, Thomas Hill and Samuel Marsden. -
