This gorgeous original painting by Wayne Thiebaud is an excellent example of his signature, dreamy Photorealist style.
The subject is a woman, likely his wife Betty Jean Thiebaud, looking slightly away from the viewer, clad in a yellow hat and a white cotton dress. Behind her on a glass-top table are elements common in Thiebaud’s famous still-lifes, in this case a tube of lipstick and a makeup compact. Thiebaud’s trademark style comes from both his kaleidoscopic use of color, which lends a vibrant glow to the image, and harsh brush strokes that are used to frame a subject. The result is a lifelike yet surreal aura that transforms a simple scene into a radiant study of everyday life. This piece is signed and dated verso. -
