Description
George Hartwell (1815-1901)
American
Portrait of a Young Woman in a Black Dress
Unsigned, ca. 1840.
Oil on board
16 ¼” h x 12 ½” w
Excellent condition, appears to be in the original frame.
As a member of the Prior-Hamblin School, Hartwell's flat style of painting is closely related to the work of William Matthew Prior. Hartwell was also a sign painter. This lovely example of Hartwell's work has all the attributes we love to see. This typical composition with the drapery swag left of the sitter is further complimented with a pleasing look from the sitter wearing a necklace and a black dress highlighted with faint stripes. -
