Description
Original oil painting on fiberboard of a floral still life by the well known Hungarian/American artist Zelma Baylos. Signed lower left. Circa 1935. Condition is very good. The painting is housed in a semi antique gold ornate frame with old repairs. Overall framed measurements are 25 by 20.25 inches. Provenance: A Long Island, New York collector.
Zelma Baylos (1868–1950) was a Hungarian-American painter and sculptor renowned for her impressionist portraits, figures, and lithographs. Operating primarily from her studio in New York City's Carnegie Hall, she captured the likenesses of notable figures across American society.Life and Career Birth: Born in Butka, Hungary, in October 1868.Education: She studied in Paris under notable masters, including Courtois and Prinet, before continuing her education at the National Academy of Design (NAD) in New York.Style and Medium: Baylos predominantly worked in oil paints, creating evocative and classical impressionist portraits.Professional Life: Beyond her painting, she was a multifaceted creative who worked as a lecturer and writer, and maintained strong ties to the arts community, often showcasing her portraits in notable galleries such as the Ralston Galleries in NYC.Legacy: She lived and worked in New York City, eventually purchasing property in Mahopac, NY. Today, her original paintings and portraits are occasionally traded through major fine art auctions and antique dealers. -
