Description
Vintage heliogravure after a 1936 photograph by Brassaï (Gyula Halász), the Hungarian‑born French photographer celebrated for his atmospheric images of Paris by night. The dramatic composition captures a circus scene: a white horse in harness and a dark horse seen from behind, illuminated by spotlights that cut through the surrounding darkness, with the trainer or rider partially visible beyond the animals. Strong chiaroscuro and focused beams of light create a cinematic, stage‑like effect typical of Brassaï’s nocturnal work.
The image is printed as a rich black‑and‑white heliogravure on smooth paper, offering deep blacks and refined mid‑tones consistent with high‑quality intaglio printing of the 1930s. It is presented in a contemporary brushed‑metal frame with a wide off‑white mat that gives the image a generous border and emphasizes its graphic impact.
Brassaï’s images of Paris nightlife, cafés, circuses and street fairs from the 1930s are among the most iconic documents of the city’s interwar culture. Vintage gravures after his photographs are prized as an accessible way to collect his work while retaining period printing and the characteristic mood of his nocturnal scenes -
