Art Deco Pair of Silver Plated and Portoro Marble Bases, 1930

$ 2,900
  • Description
    An elegant pair of German Art Deco vases, each hand-hammered in silver-plated metal and raised on a base of Portoro marble — Their bold black-and-gold veining providing a striking material contrast to the polished silver above. The baluster-form bodies feature a gently swelling profile, rising from a stepped foot to a flared, beaded rim that echoes classical vase forms filtered through an Art Deco sensibility.

    Each vase is encircled at the shoulder with a band of stylized, hammered scallop or "swag" motifs — a repeating half-moon pattern that adds textural relief and a subtle architectural rhythm to the otherwise smooth silhouette. The body below shows a fine, all-over hand-hammered surface texture, characteristic of quality silver-plated metalware of the period, catching the light in soft, irregular facets.
