Description
Photographer Mitchell Funk selects a perfect day with intense direct lighting to create a photograph that is as much abstraction as it is representation. Funk lies on his stomach to achieve a deliberately acute low angle, looking up at a Mercury grill from a "worm's eye view". He composes the subject as an extreme closeup to dominate the picture plane's center part. Behind the car are three colorful historic houses. They become graphically integrated with the car. A line of red-rimmed windows echo the shape of the car's headlights and grill. In the background, a rising granite hill is covered with intense autumn colors of bright orange, yellow, and ochre. The sky turns into a solid, flat plane of deep cobalt blue and frames the top of the composition. The image was taken in 1977 and for it's time was radical for its use of hype-lighting and acute design in color photography. It still holds up after almost 50 years as an unexpected and intriguing image. A mint clean Quebec, "le belle province 77 " licence plate servers as a time stamp.
This archival color photograph by fine art photographer Mitchell Funk is signed, dated and numbered 3/15, lower right recto. Other sizes are available and the fine art photograph is unframed and printed later. Printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art paper. Condition is Mint.
