This photograph was taken in 1970, yet it looks surprisingly contemporary. The giveaway is how underdeveloped the Manhattan skyline looks. Both towers of the World Trade Center are still under construction with cranes on their rooftops. ( See lower left corner ) There were almost no high-rise constructions to compete with buildings that have pointed tops.
Taken from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade with a wide-angle lens, Photographer Mitchell Funk devotes over ninety percent of the pictorial space to the sky. With his radical composition, he re-imagines what a skyline view of the Manhattan skyline looks like.
Additionally, enhanced color is used to create mood and eschews the typical snapshot cityscape aesthetic. Finally, Funk inserts an oversized moon into the upper left quadrant to balance out the composition. The photograph was published in the groundbreaking Time-Life Library of Photography series Travel Photography in 1972.
The image is part of a new epic exhibition, Mitchell Funk Photographs The Chrysler Building for 50 Years. In the lower right corner, between the silhouetted Empire State Building and the tower of the Brooklyn Bridge, you will see the shape of the Chrysler Building's crown and spire. "Wherever You Look, You See The Chrysler Building," even from Brooklyn Heights.
The Chrysler Building is one of the most photographed buildings in the world. Yet Mitchell Funk's photographs of it are anything but a tourist snapshot. For 50 years, Funk has been celebrating and rediscovering it visually in a way that exemplifies the innovative spirit of its creators.
The work is signed dated and numbered 3/15 lower right recto, with other sizes available, and it's unframed and printed later. Printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art paper
