Description
The current work was most likely a commercial assignment for a bra and girdle advertisement in a women's magazine, and perhaps even in Vogue or Harper's Bazaar. It features Gruau's signature graphic poster-like style merged with a woman's intimate clothing. The glamorous, contemporary winged subject recalls the goddess Nike, the personification of victory. Perhaps that was the client's subliminal message: use our bra and girdle, and success in love and romance will come your way. Housed a new high-end frame in museum plexiglass and looks highly elegant on the wall . Framed size 18.82 x 23.75, Initialed lower right
René Gruau was one of the most influential and revolutionary fashion illustrators of the 20th century. Born Renato Zavagli Ricciardelli delle Caminate in Italy to an aristocratic family, he later moved to Paris and adopted his mother's maiden name. His distinct aesthetic came to define the post-World War II "Golden Age" of French haute couture. -
