Rainy Street, Berlin — Vintage Heliogravure by Martin Munkácsi 1936

A rare and evocative heliogravure by Martin Munkácsi, taken from a high vantage point looking straight down onto a wet Berlin street. A horse-drawn carriage, its driver sheltered beneath a striped umbrella, and two pedestrians below are all mirrored in the rain-slicked pavement — light, shadow, and reflection composed into a single graphic image. The print bears the photographer's period credit line, "Munkacsi – Berlin," printed directly on the sheet, tying the work to Munkácsi's years at the Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung (1928–1934), where he transformed photojournalism with dynamic, high-vantage, "caught-in-motion" compositions.

Martin Munkácsi (born Márton Mermelstein, 1896–1963) was a Hungarian photographer whose bold, dynamic style reshaped both photojournalism and fashion photography in the 20th century. He began his career covering sports in Budapest, where his innovative approach — treating action shots as meticulously composed images — set him apart. A chance photograph of a fatal street brawl, later used as courtroom evidence, brought him notoriety and, in 1928, a contract with Berlin's Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung, then the world's largest-circulation picture magazine. There he photographed everything from the Graf Zeppelin to Greta Garbo, developing a signature style built on unexpected angles, motion, and a documentarian's eye for ordinary Berliners alongside celebrities. After the Nazis purged the magazine's Jewish staff in 1934, Munkácsi emigrated to New York, where Harper's Bazaar editor Carmel Snow hired him — his outdoor, action-based approach to fashion photography (famously photographing models running and leaping) is widely credited with inventing modern fashion photography. His work profoundly influenced Henri Cartier-Bresson, who cited a Munkácsi image as the picture that made him want to become a photographer.
