About this Artwork
Edition: 3/5 + 2A/P
This early work from Caldicott's acclaimed Tupperware series exemplifies his ability to breathe life into the ordinary. Vibrant colours and forms emerge, showcasing the artist's talent for elevating the mundane.
This work, part of Sir Elton John's collection, is a testament to Caldicott's enduring impact.
About the Artist
Richard Caldicott is an English artist who explores abstract photography and creates abstract compositions on paper. He lives and works in London.
Education
He studied at the Royal College of Art, London where he obtained his master in 1987.
Technique
As an interdisciplinary artist, Caldicott comes across materials and techniques, including drawing, photography, and sculpture. His works on paper, made with ballpoint pen and inkjet printing, reveal a bare sophistication whether it be with minimal drawings or with buoyant and colourful forms.
Caldicott's photograms and paper negative series consist of diptychs with the cut-out paper negative placed on the left and the photogram on the right.
Inspiration
His work has a relationship with architectural and musical structures, formalism and geometry, referring to modernist painters, designers and architects like Donald Judd, Max Bill, Barnett Newman and Ellsworth Kelly.
"I like artists who do other stuff. With Judd, I like his architecture, his furniture, his printmaking. It's the same with Max Bill, somebody who crossed over into different fields, with furniture and architecture"
Repetition is an important element of the artist's work, this strategy echoes the art making of the Minimalism period. So is series, "Caldicott is an archetypal adopter of a 'serial attitude'" as per writer Derek Horton's quote.
Relevant Quotes
Sir Elton John who is a fervent collector of Caldicott's work, wrote, "Richard has the unique ability to transform the medium of photography, creating something new, but still using the most traditional technique. Richard is one of those artists who elevates photography to an important and recognized form of contemporary expression."
Exhibitions
Caldicott's work has been exhibited in solo and group shows and art fairs throughout the world including FIAC Paris, Art Basel, Paris Photo, Photo Miami and the Venice Biennale.
Richard Caldicott’s work is currently on display at the V&A in London as part of the exhibition Fragile Beauty: Photographs from the Sir Elton John and David Furnish Collection.
To coincide with this exhibition, we are now representing those 12 new CPrints, personally acquired by Sir Elton John, some of which have never been displayed before.
With most of these photographs having only one or two editions remaining, this is an unparalleled chance to own a piece of art history -
