About Edgar Fernhout
Edgar Richard Johannes Fernhout (1912-1974) was a notable Dutch painter rooted in a prominent artistic family. His mother was Charley Toorop and grandfather Jan Toorop. He grew up in Bergen and Amsterdam, deeply influenced by his mother, beginning to paint around age 16. He trained briefly in Paris and launched his first solo show at 20 in Amsterdam. Fernhout’s early work, comprising still lifes, self-portraits, and landscapes, was rendered in a meticulous, magic‑realist style. After marrying Rachel Pellekaan in 1934, they lived in Italy, where he immersed himself in Renaissance painting and secured portrait commissions. Back in the Netherlands during WWII, Fernhout painted polder scenes, beaches, and still lifes imbued with subdued, precise realism. In the 1950s and ’60s, his work evolved towards near‑abstract compositions - grids of color that still referenced landscape.
His work is held in prominent Dutch institutions like Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Kröller‑Müller museum, and MORE.
