Don Quixote- the namesake of the novel by Miguel de Cervantes, is perhaps the most important work of Golden Age Spanish literature. The story follows the adventures of a nobleman named Alonso Quixano who descends into insanity and decides to transform himself into a knight-errant (caballero andante) to serve his country, under the nom de guerre Don Quixote de la Mancha. This etching depicts Quixote with whip and lasso in hand riding a bucking horse, realized in swirling expressionistic strokes all rendered in a burnt umber tone. -
