Elizabeth Turk meticulously carves abstract marble sculptures of collars, ribbons, wings, and obscure latticework. She begins with drawings and then works in a subtractive process, cutting into large blocks of marble. Turk’s practice establishes a tension between the delicateness and apparent fragility of her forms and the strength of the material; her completed sculptures resemble three-dimensional drawings, or a line traced through space. “Perhaps the core question is why, as organic, curved, soft creatures, we think and find a resonance in linear structures,” she says. -
