Dimensions: 23¾" H × 14¼" W × 7¾" D

This striking sculpture exemplifies Leza McVey's pioneering approach to ceramics, blending surrealism and modernism. Known for her departure from traditional symmetrical forms, McVey hand-built her pieces, creating freeform and asymmetrical works influenced by her studies with Maija Grotell at Cranbrook. Her art reflects the organic sculptural language of Henry Moore, whose work she encountered during a 1949 visit to New York.
McVey’s influence on the evolution of ceramic art is recognized by institutions like the Metropolitan Museum, which highlights her role in redefining the vessel as a form of expressive sculpture. This piece, combining surrealist imagery with meticulous craftsmanship, is a testament to her innovative vision. -
