Ernst Fuchs 'Waldidylle vor der Himmelsmauer' Hand Signed Artist's Proof 1974.

A mysterious and wonderful work by famous artist Ernst Fuchs (1930-2015), the best friend of Salvador Dali. It is an artist's proof of his work 'Waldidylle vor der Himmelsmauer' or 'Idyllic Forest Scene before Heaven's Wall' depicting Aphrodite in a dark forest with a wall of eyes behind her. Very symbolic and heavy. Very well made, with lots of intricate details and symbolic and surrealist touches.

Being a hand signed artist's proof (signed Probedruck lower left) with the original frame (from his studio) - this is a rare work of art. It was given as a present to the Dutch gallery owner Walter Kamp who was a good friend of Fuchs in 1974.

It comes in a good and original condition with some wear to the frame due to age and use.

    Ernst Fuchs (1930–2015)

Ernst Fuchs was an Austrian painter, sculptor, architect, and composer, best known as a founding member of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. Born in Vienna in 1930, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, where he and other young artists sought to move beyond the prevailing trends of abstraction and return to a highly detailed, visionary form of realism.

Fuchs’s work combines influences from Renaissance and Baroque masters with biblical themes, mythology, and psychological symbolism. He experimented with traditional techniques such as egg tempera and glazing, creating jewel-like surfaces that gave his paintings a luminous, almost otherworldly quality. His imagery often drew on religious narratives, dream states, and archetypal figures, blending spiritual and erotic elements in a distinctive style.

Beyond painting, Fuchs also worked in sculpture, architecture, stage design, and music. In the 1970s, he acquired the historic Otto Wagner Villa in Vienna, which he transformed into both his home and a museum dedicated to his art. Today, the Ernst Fuchs Museum preserves his wide-ranging body of work and serves as a center for Fantastic Realism.
