River Landscapes

$ 16,000
  • Description
    River landscape with fishermen beside an ancient ruin and hills in the background
    River landscape with a shepherd and his flock and a castle on a hill in the background

    A member of the fifth generation of artists from the von Bemmel family to work for the Nuremberg court, and an accomplished flutist, Georg-Christoph-Gottlieb II excelled in the execution of small-scale landscapes, painted in tempera on parchment. He also produced portraits in the miniaturist tradition of his father, Georg-Christoph-Gottlieb I, a painter of armorial bearings, historical scenes, landscapes and portraits. The younger Georg-Christoph-Gottlieb is also thought to have trained with his cousin, Karl-Sebastian, as well as with members of the Dietzsch family. Continuing in his family’s stylistic oeuvre, Georg-Christoph-Gottlieb II created distinctly Northern landscapes infused with an Italianate appreciation for symmetry and idealized settings, as well as the frequent use of Romain-inspired ruins. His fascination with ancient ruins was perhaps also inherited from his father, a student of Georg-Martin Preissler, who was known to have traveled to Italy and engraved the ancient statues of Rome.
