Description
Pesaro, Italy, 1763-65, from the Casali and Callegari Factory. An Italian ceramic vase with polychrome decoration with a woman between two green palm leaves and on the back a female winged caryatid balancing a basket of fruit on her head flying over foliage and scroll design; small male caryatids at the base, the border and base with rose and floral decoration.
The Pesaro potters were highly prized and as early as 1490 tiles were ordered from them for the Gonzaga of Mantua; the tiles from Isabella d’Estes apartment are now at the Louvre and Victoria & Albert Museum.
The most prominent factories were that founded in 1757 by Giuseppe Bertolucci and another founded in 1763 by Antonio Casali and Filippo Antonio Callegari from Lodi who made tin-glazed ware in both European and Chinese styles with a revived version of the sixteenth century grotesque style of Urbino.
