Description
Late 19th century Italian Orientalist watercolour painting by Giulio Rosati
Italian, Late 19th Century
Paper: Height 40cm, width 55cm
Frame: Height 62cm, width 79cm, depth 3cm
This superb Orientalist watercolour is the work of Italian artist Giulio Rosati (1858–1917), a painter celebrated for his imaginative depictions of Middle Eastern life. Although Rosati never journeyed to the region himself, his compositions were shaped by a vivid imagination and informed by contemporary literature and photography of the time.
The artwork presents a desert encounter between two men. One is seated comfortably on the sandy terrain beneath a yellow blanket, gesturing animatedly toward the other, who stands before him with a rifle slung over his shoulder. Their garments, rendered in subdued, natural tones, reflect the traditional attire associated with Middle Eastern culture.
A warm, earthy desert landscape forms the backdrop, punctuated with intriguing details that bring the scene to life. In the lower left corner, elements such as a section of their tent and a collection of earthenware vessels add visual texture. A striking blue fabric among these items offers a vivid contrast, mirroring the gentle hue of the sky visible in the opposite corner.
The painting is signed ‘Giulio Rosati’ in the lower right and is beautifully set within a distinctive giltwood frame, whose ornate and unusual form complements the elegance of the composition.
Finely executed, this piece is an exceptional addition for collectors of 19th century Orientalist art or fine antique watercolours.
