CHIPPENDALE DESK AND BOOKCASE SIGNED BY DANIEL SPENCER

Provenance: The secretary is inscribed on a desk interior drawer, “Daniel Spencer.” Spencer was a nephew of cabinetmaker John Goddard. Daniel Spencer worked in Newport, Providence and Dartmouth, Massachusetts in the mid eighteenth century. He was born in East Greenwich, Rhode Island to John Goddard's older sister, Margaret Goddard Spencer (1713-1793) and Thomas Spencer, Sr. (1717-1753). Two years after Thomas, Sr's death their mother moved the family to Newport.
Other pieces now attributed to Daniel Spencer include the Nicholas Brown Desk and Bookcase, the block and shell desk and bookcase at Yale, and the block and shell chest on chest at Chipstone.
