English Aesthetic Movement Ebonized and Parcel Gilt Canterbury Stand or Étagère
-
Description
A chic circa 1875 English Aesthetic Movement period ebonized and parcel gilt étagère of three tier form, the top shelf with brass 'baluster' gallery above fluted colonette supported second open tier and lower 'Canterbury' tier with X-form dividers atop base with bottom drawer on compressed bun feet. The design of this stand with its Charles Eastlake-style gilt incised decoration is characteristically Aesthetic Movement, referencing and synthesizing many styles such as the English Regency and French Napoleon III periods, and the form was originally known as a "music stand" to hold song books with the divided section sheet music, but functions just as easily today for storing and displaying folios, books, magazines, artworks, or ceramics.
