Description
An exquisitely carved cupboard in the Gothic Revival taste, crafted in France during the last quarter of the 19th century, the cabinet is noteworthy for it’s very fine walnut boards and wonderful surface patina. The finish absolutely glows, which shows beautifully against the crisp lifelike carvings across the facade. It features a pair of cupboard doors that open to reveal a large space, ideal as a liquor cabinet or small biblioteque. A pair of drawers are hosted in the carvings beneath these doors, both crisply hand dovetailed with oak secondary woods in the typical French manner. This upper section projects over a hollow lower section, probably intended for the display of a large sculpture or other collectible which would be framed against the simple architecture of the paneled backing. The entire cupboard is crafted in a single piece with relatively slight dimensions, projecting with a depth of just under 17” - it does not in any way dominate or overwhelm a room, but rather is quite tasteful with it’s proportions. It is a gorgeous and most finely executed strikepoint piece for the classical interior.
