Description
Many associate Danish furniture with the country's golden age, the mid-20th century. This model shows why: its design follows in the vein of Scandinavian functionality, timelessness and quality. It has a classic look, recalling the designs created for H.P. Hansen by Arne Vodder, where functionality was met with the highest quality and materials.
The wooden veneer has a grain that has come out beautifully over time, and gives the sideboard its defining, striking look. The wide surfaces and the strict rectangular look are perfect to showcase the patterns. The four sliding doors reveal the versatile shelving and storage system of the sideboard; three drawers on the left side, with green fabric lining and dovetail joinery that testify of precision and great craftsmanship. The middle compartment is the largest, with three levels divided by two shelves. Finally, the third compartment has a single shelf, and can be arranged freely. The sliding doors have carved handles arranged symmetrically, enabling easy opening while maintaining a clean and uncluttered front. Their design is subtle, leaving the focus on the wood. Similarly, the tapered legs with the front stretcher give a stately appearance to the sideboard due to their length and sleek appearance, without drawing the focus from the dark stained wooden body.
This sideboard’s understated, yet well-though out design with simple lines and expert craftsmanship is exemplary of the works created by Danish master cabinetmakers of the era. The interest in Scandinavian design today could be merely nostalgia for a simpler, more sincere approach; a memory of a time when people invested in well-crafted objects for their homes because it was assumed they'd live with them forever. This sideboard is such a piece, sure to accompany its user for a lifetime.
