Thai Lion Sentry Mirrored Cabinet
-
Description
An elaborate Thai cabinet, dating from midway through the Chulalongkorn reign. The lions at its base as well as the entwined hoho birds and vines are established Thai motifs. The twist columns and applied swaged tassels may reflect French and British Colonial taste; though it is doubtful that this case was made for export. Thailand, never formally colonized by Europeans; remained a buffer state between British India or Burma to the west, and French Indochina to the east. Mirror height is 57"; which might possibly indicate that this cabinet was originally to be a dressing wardrobe for a child or person of shorter stature. Its cabinet interior is shelved as a cupboard, linen press, or dressing wardrobe; but does accommodate wine bottles on their sides or liquor bottles standing upright.
