Description
1939 New York World’s Fair Art Deco Airplane Lamp
Created circa 1939 in the United States, this striking Art Deco airplane lamp captures the fascination with aviation, speed and modern technology that defined the period. A chrome airplane appears suspended in flight above an illuminated glass globe, giving the piece a dramatic sense of movement and reflecting the streamlined aesthetic that became synonymous with late 1930s design.
The lamp strongly evokes the optimistic spirit of the 1939 New York World’s Fair, whose theme, “The World of Tomorrow,” celebrated technological advancement and visions of a modern future. The Fair’s famous Trylon and Perisphere became enduring symbols of the event, while innovations including television helped demonstrate how dramatically everyday life might change in the coming decades. This lamp brings together that same fascination with aviation, machinery and futuristic design in a highly decorative form.
Constructed of chrome and glass, the sculptural airplane, glowing globe and substantial stepped metal base make it an exceptional example of American Machine Age and Art Deco design from the period. - More Information
