This beautiful antique French chandelier dates from the 19th Century and could be attributed to the master bronzier Ferdinand Barbedienne. It is cast entirely in gilt bronze, and features Empire style and neo-Grec ornamentation all over. The base of the chandelier features winged sphinx supports shown sitting on cross form brackets, at the centre of which there is an ormolu torch decorated with a neo-Grec relief. Above the sphinx supports there is a circular ormolu band, to which four further torches with neo-Grec reliefs are attached. Each of the five lights feature frosted glass tulip form shades. The chandelier is supported by four fluted scrolling ormolu supports, with a crown at the very top. -
