Description
PAIR OF FRENCH LOUIS XVI STYLE GILT BRONZE WALL SCONCES
France, second half of the 19th century
Gilt bronze
20" H x 6 1/2" D x 13" W
A fine pair of French Louis XVI style gilt bronze wall sconces, each with two scrolling candle arms issuing from a tapering central backplate. The design follows the neoclassical taste of the late eighteenth century, the central body stop-fluted with seed pods on reeds below a remarkably fine casting of a ram's head. Flanking on either side are swags of oak leaves issuing from just behind the ram's ears, projecting forward to drape over the scrolling acanthus arms on either side. These raise foliate decorated bobeches and a single candle well on either side fitted with a white cardboard "candlestick" covering the electrical elements. Note that the wall sconces have been very carefully wired in a way that avoids drilling any holes or disturbing the original surface. A vasiform finial raises a curling flame over each, this also draped in layers of oak leaves hung as a garland.
It is worth looking closely at the quality of the casting throughout, as each element has been painstakingly hammered, chiseled and chased to create fabulous surface textures that enliven the elements and reflect the light.
Condition: Fine original condition. Wiring is unchecked and the sconces should be carefully examined by a lighting specialist prior to installation. Trace rubbing to the original gilding. Cardboard candle sleeves show wear and later paint. A very fine presentation. Ready to place.
