Description
This rare and large ceiling lamp, produced in Italy during the 1960s, is designed in the style of Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, two influential figures in Italian mid-century design known for their innovative use of materials and sculptural forms. The lamp features a shade made from plastic polymer resin, applied over an iron frame using a specialized spraying technique. This process creates a lightweight yet structurally sound form with a semi-translucent surface that softly diffuses light, producing a warm and inviting atmosphere.
The shade’s organic shape is defined by undulating curves and a ribbed texture, evoking natural forms and emphasizing the dynamic interplay between light and shadow. Over time, the material has developed a patina that enriches the lamp’s visual depth and authenticity, reflecting the natural aging process typical of polymer resins used in this era. When illuminated, the lamp’s fibrous texture becomes more pronounced, contributing a tactile quality that enhances its sculptural appeal.
Measuring 55 centimeters in diameter (21.7 inches) and 60 centimeters in height (23.6 inches), the lamp occupies a significant visual and spatial presence. Its design and materials showcase the experimental spirit of 1960s Italian design, where innovative production methods and organic aesthetics combined to produce functional art pieces that continue to resonate in contemporary contexts.
