Description
The ceiling lamp model T-5, designed by Alf Svensson and Yngvar Sandström and produced by Bergboms in Sweden, is a striking example of mid-century Swedish lighting design. This model exemplifies the designers’ commitment to clean geometry, material clarity, and functional elegance—qualities that define much of their collaborative work from the 1950s and 60s.
Constructed entirely from brass, the lamp displays a polished surface with a warm golden tone that has naturally aged into a soft, vintage patina. This patina introduces gentle tonal variation across the surface, enhancing the lamp’s visual depth while preserving the integrity of its form. The brass retains its reflective quality without excessive shine, offering a sophisticated and understated presence.
The form consists of a wide, shallow dome measuring 53 cm in diameter, with a height of 28 cm, suspended from a central stem to an overall drop of 97 cm. This proportion allows the fixture to cast a broad and even distribution of light, making it ideal for use above dining tables or in large open spaces. The clean, disc-like silhouette is softened by the subtle curve of the shade, which diffuses downward light while minimizing glare.
The lamp is designed to accommodate multiple bulbs, allowing for strong functional illumination while maintaining an ambient quality when fitted with softer light sources. The precision in material transitions—between the canopy, suspension stem, and the shade—speaks to the manufacturing quality of Bergboms, one of Sweden’s most respected lighting producers of the mid-century period.
Condition is very good vintage, with light surface wear and a consistent patina across the brass. There are no structural damages, and the original proportions and fittings are retained.
Alf Svensson and Yngvar Sandström were among Sweden’s leading modernist designers, and their work often blended industrial materials with architectural clarity. The T-5 ceiling lamp reflects this shared approach, offering a sculptural and utilitarian object with enduring visual appeal.
