Description
Antique French gilt bronze three-branch chandelier
French, late 19th Century
Height 106cm, width 50cm, depth 50cm
Designed during the sumptuous Belle Époque, this gilt bronze chandelier demonstrates the very best of the period.
The chandelier is supported by a central highly ornate gilt bronze stem. This stem supports the three light branches, each C-scroll branch, foliate in form, terminating in a single suspended light holder. The form of the C-scroll branches is mirrored below by the three acanthus leaves that support gilt bronze cherubim, their addition lending a feeling of Rococo classicism to the piece. The entire chandelier is laden with foliate elements: leaves and sprigs emerge from every aspect. The stem is surmounted by a corona of palmettes, also delicately cast from bronze and finely gilt. -
