Art Deco Pendant Lamp with Wooden Shade, Europe ca 1930s

Art Deco developed internationally during the 1920s and 1930s, bringing geometric forms and stylized ornament into architecture, furniture, lighting, and decorative objects. Geometry became one of its most recognisable characteristics, with stepped profiles, repeated lines, and clear volumes appearing across the decorative arts. This pendant lamp embodies the movement through a striking decorative construction.

The pendant is constructed around a hexagonal wooden shade featuring a sequence of stepped, concentric tiers. Each successive layer decreases toward the center, producing a shallow inverted-pyramid profile and giving depth to the shade. The repeated horizontal edges emphasize the geometry, while the visible grain and warm tone of the wood soften the otherwise precise composition. Along the surface, carved horizontal elements offer the shade a dynamic appearance, with flowing lines guiding the eye across the wood. A small spherical wooden finial marks the center of the shade and visually completes its downward profile. Above, a long slender suspension rod connects the shade to a compact wooden ceiling canopy, keeping the structure simple and allowing the unusual wooden shade to remain the main feature. The brass rod complements the warmth of the wood, the two materials working together to created a cohesive piece. To increase its functionality, the inside of the shade is painted white, allowing the light to bounce toward the ceiling and create ambiance despite the opacity of the wood.

Rather than depending on applied ornament, the pendant achieves its decorative effect through repetition, symmetry, material, and the profile of the shade itself. The use of simple geometry highlights the vocabulary associated with the Art Deco movement, while its materials underscore the creativity of its designer.

Condition:
In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The lamp has recently been rewired and reconditioned. There are minor dents and scratches in the metal. Due to the age and nature of the materials, the lamp may have marks, scratches, and discolouration. All lighting can be converted for US usage.
