'Once, 2018' - Soma Collection

‘Once, 2018' is a unique light sculpture reminiscent of biomorphic forms. It is part of the ‘Soma’ collection, a set of incredibly intangible luminous sculptures notably included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. Each ‘Soma’ piece is handmade out of thin glass rods blown in Italy that are individually flame worked and intertwined in Ayala Serfaty’s workshop in Tel Aviv to form an ethereal structure. The piece is then sprayed with a unique clear polymer to generate a skin-like membrane that magnifies the glass calligraphic drawing.

‘Soma’ captures the viewer’s gaze, bringing him to experience nature in its physical, spiritual and emotional dimensions. Crystals, feathers, vegetal, sea creatures...: the assertion of life forms and at the same time the impossibility of deciding between one or the other introduces an irresistible movement toward the sublime. For Ayala Serfaty does not sculpt nature, but rather gives form to the breath of life. Her work succeeds in rising above its own materiality in a powerful movement that brings the soul towards a virtually metaphysical otherworldliness.

Ayala Serfaty has exhibited in museums and galleries internationally. Her solo shows have included venues such as Tel Aviv Museum of Art, and Museum Beelden aan Zee, Den Haag, Netherlands. She has participated in group shows in venues including Herzliya Museum of Art in Israel, London Design Museum, Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York, Staatliches Museum für Kunst und Design in Nuremberg, Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg and Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.

Works by the artist are included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, the Mint Museum in Charlotte, USA, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
