Carlo Nason LT301 “Iceberg” Lamp Set for Mazzega, Italy 1970s
-
Description
Carlo Nason’s collaborations with Mazzega resulted in some of the most intriguing sculptural lighting designs to emerge from Murano in the 20th century. This pair of LT301 “Iceberg” table lamps stands as a clear example of the meeting point between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary form.
Design
Each lamp features a layered, ribbed glass shade shaped to evoke the contours of a natural ice formation. The surface plays with light both when illuminated and when switched off, giving the glass a translucent quality with opalescent undertones. Made in Murano during the 1970s, these works were produced by the renowned AV Mazzega glassworks, known for its ability to push the boundaries of Murano techniques.
The asymmetrical form of the shade sits atop a white metal base that subtly supports the structure without distracting from its fluid silhouette. Inside, a single E14 bulb is housed, allowing the light to move through the varying depths of the ribbed glass, creating soft waves of diffused light. When lit, the icy form becomes softly radiant, and its ridged texture adds depth to the luminous effect. The design appears to oscillate between solid and ethereal, with a strong sculptural identity that hints at Nason’s interest in natural forms rendered in glass.
Condition
Both pieces retain their full visual impact and technical function. The design is featured in the Mazzega lighting catalogue, model LT301. -
