Description
The best qualities of European mid-century designers’ light fixtures are most often their atmospheric light, disciplined, functionalist design completed by unique solutions and design elements. Exemplified by these wall lamps, these qualities are not only timeless, but also ever so eye-catching.
Design-wise this pair relies on their brass structures and characteristic bubble glass shades. Controlled bubble glass, also known as “Bolle” or “Bullicante”, is glass that’s embedded with bubbles. Particularly popular during the 1950s among Murano glass artists, the bubbles are typically created by rolling the molten glass on a metal surface covered in sharp spikes, poking holes that are then covered with another layer of glass, trapping air in the holes. The spherical shades showcase this unique effect beautifully against the brass structures, especially when the light is lit. The main design element however, is the brass structure fixing the lamps to the wall. Instead of traditional backplates, the lamps connect to the wall through three brass poles with a sleek, modern look. As far as it is known, this model was never mass-produced, which could have resulted naturally from the elaborate design. From the elongated brass sockets, bubble glass shades, and brass poles, these wall lamps have much to offer in every sense.
Sconces are a timeless lighting fixtures that can easily elevate their surroundings. These lamps never go out of style, and have been in use for centuries. This is especially true for mid-century brass models like this pair. While already stunning individually, these lights are even more effective when placed in close proximity to each other.
