  • Description
This superb chandelier, designed by Gio Ponti for Fontana Arte in 1938, is a variation of the Padelle chandelier designed in the early 1930s. It consists of a large flat disc of crystal glass integrated into a laid on a frosted glass rounded piece, illustrating Ponti's attention to harmony between surfaces, space, and light. The upper part of the suspension, made of crystal, is adorned with delicate brass details and hand painted aluminium. A very rare find, fully restored and rewired, and found in an amazing condition.

Literature : Gio Ponti Designer, Padova 1936-1941, Universo Mario, edition Laterza 1989, page 60 illustrates a similar example.
Gio Ponti (1891-1979) was an Italian architect, designer, and artist. As the founder of the architecture magazine Domus, he is renowned for his imprint on numerous iconic buildings of the 20th century, including the Pirelli Tower in Milan. His collaboration with Fontana Arte, which began in the 1930s, resulted in a series of innovative works still highly coveted today, such as the "Padelle" chandelier. As Fontana Arte's artistic director until the mid-1950s, Ponti expanded the company's scope beyond lighting to encompass interior design. His creations, like the "1933" table lamp and the "0024" wall mirror, blended modernist lines with exceptional craftsmanship, solidifying Fontana Arte's reputation as a leader in contemporary Italian design.
Fontana Arte, founded in 1932, is renowned for its pioneering contributions to the world of lighting and furniture design, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics to create iconic pieces that stand the test of time.
