Description
While Hans-Agne Jakobsson designed and produced various types of furniture, his lighting received greater international attention, not without a good reason. As this “V-169/1” wall lamp showcases, the Swedish designer mastered both the direction and colour of his lighting designs.
With the brass frame holding the tinted glass shade, this lamp clearly shows the Swedish designer’s studies in architecture, with beautiful geometric forms and symmetry dominating the structure. The sconce is a wall-mounted lighting fixture, traditionally used to hold candles or torches. This sconce additionally has a structural design that is reminiscent of a torch, with an elongated lower half and a beautiful cylindrical glass shade. The glass is transparent, letting the brass and lightbulb show, further enhancing the torch-like look. The 1960s were defined by leading Swedish designers’ sleek and innovative modernist designs that became the trademark style in Scandinavian modern lighting. The simple design of this lamp is clean with a straightforwardly modern look. Combining the brass structure and back plate with the translucent cylindrical glass shade, this sconce is brilliant in its simplicity. The prowess of the designer becomes evident as this model stands as a statement piece despite the minimalism. Since the two materials - brass and tinted glass - dictate the look, much attention was paid to the quality and to the craftsmanship that united them into the cylindrical shape to create a timelessly modern look.
The design has great proportions, and when lit, the lamp creates an exceptionally atmospheric light, giving the brass a vivid colour as well. Sconces are a timeless type of lighting fixture that can easily elevate their surroundings. This fixture will never go out of style, and has been in use for centuries for a good reason. The model was produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson’s own company in Markaryd, Sweden and are marked as well.
