Scandinavian Modern Ceiling Lamp in Brass & Glass by Hans-Agne Jakobsson, 1960s

  • Description
The ceiling lamp model T372/12 Patricia, designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden, is a sophisticated and atmospheric example of Scandinavian lighting design from the mid-20th century. Constructed from brass and glass, the lamp is distinguished by its dramatic radial composition, consisting of twelve evenly spaced amber-colored glass globes supported by a circular brass armature.

Each globe is made of hand-blown glass in a warm amber hue, designed to diffuse light gently and create a soft, ambient glow. The globes are arranged around the central brass frame in a symmetrical formation, lending the fixture a chandelier-like presence with a clear emphasis on balance and spatial rhythm. The contrast between the luminous glass and the metallic structure enhances the visual richness of the piece, while the warm tones of both materials reinforce the intimate lighting atmosphere Jakobsson sought to achieve in his work.

The brass frame features a clean, geometric layout with subtle detailing, and it has developed a natural, even patina that adds depth to its golden surface without compromising the clarity of its form. The combination of warm brass and amber glass was a hallmark of Jakobsson’s designs, intended to counteract the harshness of Nordic winters by casting gentle, enveloping light throughout a room.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009), a Swedish lighting designer, was known for his ability to shape light through material, color, and form. After founding his company in Markaryd in the 1950s, Jakobsson developed a wide range of lighting fixtures, many of which emphasized atmosphere and domestic comfort. His work often featured natural materials and subdued lighting effects, distancing itself from the starkness of some contemporaneous modernist trends.

This particular example of model T372/12 remains in excellent vintage condition. All twelve glass globes are intact, with no visible cracks or chips, and the brass components show only light wear consistent with age, contributing to the overall authenticity and appeal of the piece. With all original components preserved and in working condition, this lamp stands as both a functional lighting solution and a sculptural centerpiece, emblematic of Jakobsson’s enduring influence on Scandinavian design.
