Set of 2 Ceiling Lamps in Brass and Silk by Hans-Agne Jakobsson, 1960s

  • Description
The ceiling lamp model T-606/3, designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his namesake company in Markaryd, Sweden during the 1960s, is a compelling example of Jakobsson’s unique ability to transform functional lighting into soft, atmospheric sculpture. This rare pair of mid-century ceiling lamps captures the essence of Scandinavian modernism with a distinct decorative flair, combining precise structural elements with richly tactile materials.

Each lamp features a polished brass frame from which three arms extend symmetrically to support cylindrical shades, each finished with cascading cream-colored silk fringes. These fringes are not merely decorative—they serve a critical function in Jakobsson’s lighting philosophy by diffusing light in a way that eliminates glare, creating a warm and inviting glow. The interplay between the reflective brass and the absorbent, textured fringe contributes to a sense of understated luxury and ambient softness that is central to Jakobsson’s work.

The structure itself is formally balanced, with a circular arrangement that distributes both weight and light evenly. The clean lines of the brass frame contrast with the gentle movement and organic drape of the fringes, yielding a visual tension between order and softness. Over time, the brass has developed a subtle, even patina that enhances the depth and warmth of the material while attesting to the lamp’s vintage authenticity.

Measuring 50 cm in diameter and 29 cm in height (19.7 x 11.4 inches), each lamp is scaled to function as a primary ceiling fixture in both residential and hospitality settings. The relatively low profile and radial symmetry make it especially well-suited to dining rooms, foyers, or intimate lounge areas where it can serve as both an illumination source and a sculptural centerpiece.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was a defining figure in 20th-century Swedish lighting design, celebrated for his sensitivity to atmosphere, material, and form. Originally trained as a cabinetmaker and architect, Jakobsson brought a finely tuned sense of proportion and craftsmanship to his lighting work. His use of fringe—in silk, glass, and other materials—was innovative in its ability to soften electric light, creating a mood closer to candlelight or firelight than the harsher illumination common in modern interiors.

The pair remains in good vintage condition, with minor signs of wear consistent with age and use. The silk fringe maintains its delicate luster and movement, and the brass structure retains its structural integrity and aesthetic coherence.
