Ceiling Lamps in Brass and Opaline Glass by Hans Bergström, 1940s

  • Description
This very rare set of ceiling lamps or flush mounts, designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, represents a refined chapter in Scandinavian lighting history. Dating to the 1940s, these pieces are exemplary of Bergström’s early work and reflect the emerging modernist aesthetic in Swedish design—a balance of simplicity, quality materials, and atmospheric lighting.

Each lamp features a combination of brass and opaline glass, a pairing that became a hallmark of mid-century Scandinavian lighting. The brass components—including the mounting plate and any connecting hardware—display a warm, naturally aged patina that adds to their historical charm. These metallic accents serve as elegant yet understated structural elements, offering both visual weight and support.

The opaline glass shades are smoothly domed and softly diffusive, designed to emit a warm, even glow when illuminated. The glass has been meticulously formed to eliminate glare while providing an inviting ambient light—perfect for residential interiors where comfort and visual clarity are valued. Their flush-mounted form makes them well-suited for lower ceilings or transitional spaces, blending seamlessly into their environment while still maintaining a distinctive presence.

Hans Bergström (1910–1996) was a pioneering figure in Swedish lighting design and a co-founder of Ateljé Lyktan, established in 1934. His work bridged functionalism and poetic material expression, with a strong emphasis on refined craftsmanship and the intelligent use of light to define space. In the 1940s and 1950s, Bergström laid the foundation for a new Scandinavian lighting idiom—less ornate than the earlier Swedish Grace style, but richer in texture and intent than strict modernist minimalism.

These lamps, produced by Ateljé Lyktan, embody the firm’s ethos: artisanally crafted, materially rich, and technologically forward-thinking for their time. Known for its commitment to high-quality lighting, Ateljé Lyktan was instrumental in transitioning Swedish interiors toward a more modern, comfortable, and aesthetically cohesive environment, with Bergström’s vision at the core.

In terms of condition, these ceiling lamps are very well preserved. The opaline glass shades are intact and free from chips or visible scratches, maintaining their softly glowing quality. The brass elements show a consistent, warm patina, a hallmark of authenticity that contributes to their vintage character without detracting from their function or aesthetic clarity.
