Description
This table lamp is considered an “important” design, meaning it was quite groundbreaking at the time of its creation in 1987. Not only is the design peculiar, so are the materials that were used to give it physical form.
Looking “alien” in the best way possible, this unique lamp consists of a frustoconical metal body that supports a peculiarly shaped white opaline ABS diffuser. ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is an opaque thermoplastic and amorphous polymer commonly referred to by its abbreviation (and used for LEGO as well). The postmodern design utilizes unusual shapes, such as the diffuser that is in the shape of a quarter of a sphere balanced on a ball joint. The swivelling ball joint connects to a metal, fan-like holder that clasps the diffuser tightly. The opaque surface dims the light and creates an atmospheric light source. While not possessing the loud colour palette of the Memphis style, this model was created with revolutionary ideas and material solutions that recall the 1980s movement’s individual creations in a distinctly Postmodern style that blended stylistic traits of 1950s kitsch, Art Deco, and Pop Art. Memphis’s fresh approach to design, which was characterized by creativity and humour, came to be a lasting stylistic hallmark of the 1980s.
Bilumen (Bianchi+Lumen), is a lighting manufacturing company founded in 1910, and is based in Peschiera Borromeo, Milan. The Czechoslovakian designer, Hans Von Klier not only designed its furnishings and offices, but also some of their models, including this table lamp.
