Holger Johansson Chandelier with 12 Smoked Glass Shades for Westal, Sweden 1960s

This marvellous chandelier is one of the most recognizable Swedish lighting designs of the mid-century era. With a brass frame holding 12 smoked, translucent glass shades, grandiose is the word to describe this model by. This model was designed by Swedish artist Holger Johansson and was produced by Westal Sweden.

The large chandelier has a brass frame with two triangular and one hexagram-shaped brass pole, with each pole holding a translucent shade. The shades resemble pressed spheres and hang from the poles. Thanks to the arrangement of the brass poles and bulbs, the chandelier divides the light over three levels in a unique way. When switched on, the light coming from the smoked glass shades brighten the yellow brass beautifully. From below, the chandelier reveals its geometrical shape that resembles a flower.

This lamp has all the characteristics Johansson was famous for: It is elegant and stylish while also being of premium quality. Johansson’s design allows it to be big and shiny, yet it never becomes tacky. The design used to decorate the ceiling of the Filadelfiakyrkan (“Philadelphia Church”) in Malmö, designed by architects Carl-Axel Stoltz and Birger Linderoth in 1935. The chandelier’s manufacturer, the Swedish company Westal, is a historical company founded in 1947. For more than seven decades, Westal has been producing high-quality and unique lighting.
