Description
It is simply impossible to talk about 20th century lighting without mentioning Finland. By the 1950s, Finland had established itself as a force for innovation. The best qualities of Finnish light fixtures are their atmospheric glow and disciplined, functionalist design that is not short of subtle decorative elements, as this hanging lamp exemplifies.
The best thing about hanging ceiling lamps - besides their stylish look - is that they are a great option to make interiors appear more spacious. They can be used to concentrate light, or to just add an accent to the room. Brass was very much one of the most popular materials of the mid-century era, and when combined with glass, a sleek shiny look can be created, like this model exemplifies. This material duo makes sense from both a functional and visual standpoint. Not only is brass corrosion-resistant and durable, but it withstands the test of time, developing a beautiful patina as the years go by. Similarly, the tinted glass is also a long-lasting material, and its beautiful shiny surface compliments the warm glow of the metal. The lamp is composed of a slender stem, which the elongated glass shade hangs from. The shade is attached thanks to a stepped brass element, balancing out the rounded impression of the piece. This lamp also features a subtle decorative element, a spiral decoration that connects to the base of the lamp. This spiral decoration is reminiscent of Finnish designer Paavo Tynell’s work. The design’s main point is its effective simplicity, free of any unnecessary ornamentation. The uncluttered look leaves the attention on the materials and on functionality that the form is also in service of. In addition, while the design is quite succinct with clear lines and precision in the smallest details, it still possesses a luxuriously stylish impression.
This model has an outstanding sense of proportions and balance with an inherently modern look that is sure to stand out in any space. Not only does this lamp provide functional illumination, but it also represents a testament to its legacy, rooted in Finnish artistry and craftsmanship.
