Description
Finnish designers and manufacturers were true pioneers of Nordic lighting design, with a functionalist nature. Works from the mid-century era today are some of the most coveted collectors items in Nordic lighting design.
This stunning mid-20th century chandelier was made at the esteemed company, Idman Oy. Established in 1936 in Turku, Finland, Idman Oy was renowned for its exceptional metalwork and craftsmanship, and this chandelier is a true testament to that reputation. With its nature inspired organic look, this chandelier is reminiscent of Finnish icons, Paavo Tynell’s and Mauri Almari’s design language. Crafted from brass, this chandelier features a delicate frame that has been expertly designed to showcase the three glass shades and the curved arms. The glass shades have a frosted appearance that diffuses the light beautifully, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere in any room. While the base shape is quite traditional, with upward facing lightbulbs and multiple arms, arranged symmetrically, the chandelier is more decorated than most of its contemporaries. The brass leaf and flower designs are intricate and delicate, adding a touch of elegance to the overall design. The floral details can also be found under each brass cup and on the finial. The three arms are arranged in an airy way so that from each side, the central part is completely visible, showcasing the overarching flowers and the richly adorned finial. The patina of the polished brass adds charm and character.
This chandelier is the perfect to add a touch of elegance to any space without being overwhelming. Its expert craftsmanship and unique character make it a timeless evidence of the golden age of mid-century Finnish lighting design.

About the manufacturer:
Idman Oy was a Finnish company specializing in lighting design. The company was founded by Karl Hjalmar Idman in Pori in 1897 to sell lamps, glassware, and porcelain. In the 1920s, the company moved from Pori to Helsinki.
In 1953, Taito Oy, founded by Paavo Tynell, merged with Idman. Many world-famous Finnish designers created models for Idman, including Paavo Tynell, Tapio Wirkkala, Maria Lindeman and Mauri Almari among others.
Nowadays, Idman's operation continues under the ownership of Philips as the large company's lighting technology centre in the Nordic countries.
